Russian Translation of Seekers #1: The Quest Begins

The Quest Begins, first book in the Seekers series by Erin Hunter, has been translated into Russian by the OLMA Media Group, the publishing company famous for translating the Warriors and Guardians of Ga’Hoole series. It seems the Seekers series is now following in their footsteps.

The cover of The Quest Begins, featured right, is similarly designed to the covers of Warriors and Guardians of Ga’Hoole; featuring the author name at the top, followed by the series name, and finally the title of the book at the bottom. It is, as with the other series, drawn by the same artist (Natalia Sokolova), but in my opinion, does not reflect the same amount of detail and realism.

The problem with this cover, I feel, is that it can’t express the beautiful detail we saw in the backgrounds of the Warriors and Ga’Hoole covers; first and foremost due to the fact that there’s only so much detail you can put in snow. Kudos goes to the person who thought of the birds in the background, which, despite hardly appearing or playing any sort of role in the story, add some extra spice and interest to an otherwise bland landscape.

Of interest are the translated series name and title of the book. Seekers now literally becomes in Russian, Wanderers, while The Quest Begins has been translated into The First Tests; the kinds of tests that mean “challenges”. All in all, a fitting translation that works. The book was published in 2009, though a more specific date is not available at this time.
