The Gnaw Wolf, sequel and second installment in the Wolves of the Beyond, will be released around October 2010. Wolves of the Beyond is a four-book spin-off series by Kathryn Lasky, set in the same world as Guardians of Ga’Hoole was. The title of the sequel to Lone Wolf was officially revealed by Scholastic Rights & Co-Editions, who kindly provided a (rather small) cover and an official summary. The novel will be illustrated by Richard Cowdrey, artist of the first book, and it will be 160 pages long.
The wolf pup Faolan was born with a twisted paw, a slight defect that caused his wolf clan to abandon him in the forest to die. But Faolan, with the help of the grizzly bear who raised him as her own, survived. Now he’s made it back to his clan and as a gnaw wolf, the lowest ranking pack member. And the hardships are just beginning. Another gnaw wolf, Heep, is jealous of Faolan and sets him up for failure. As if these humiliations are not enough, Faolon is framed for the murder of a wolf pup.
Readers of the first book, Lone Wolf, will remember Heep MacDuncan a macaldh pup with a missing tail who makes an appearance in the ending chapters and immediately sees Heap as a rival. It is unfortunate than more than half the summary focuses on recapping the previous book, but we do see some new details: humiliation, murder, and Faolan being framed (by Heep?).
Strangely enough, this book sounds a bit less exciting to me than the first one! Perhaps this is because of the few details revealed? Or perhaps the theme of “proving oneself”, which we encountered largely in Lone Wolf is making another boring reappearance? I also with that the title was simply Gnaw Wolf, continuing the pattern that Lone Wolf began.
The cover does look gorgeous, I’ll admit, so I won’t lose all hope yet. ;-) I am assuming the wolf in the center is Faolan, but notice the concealed wolf in the background, teeth bared. Heep again? Keep your eyes peeled for more information and glimpses into the world of the Beyond to come!

I CAN’T wait until October I neeeeed that book! I wonder if it’ll be as good as the first one. The part I’m really fixing on is the pup murder one. I want to see what happens, and I would also want to see what happens with Heep. Too bad about Thuderheart though…
I love that book Lone Wolf. And I was looking all over the place for the 2nd one. It sounds so awesome!!!!! I am a total wolf fanatic even though I’m only 10. When are you coming out with book 3!!! I almost cried when I read chapter 19 “The Skull in the Woods” when he found Thunderheart’s bones, that was so sad. But I thought that Faolan really learned lessons in his survival. And in the chapter “Jump for the Sun”, that was amazing!! He jumped clear over the fire pit and over to the other side; please email me back.
i love the lone wolf i can’t wait to get the next one i’ll finish it in 5 minutes…nad im gonna get it for my birthday because my birthdayis in October :D
I know I was so sad when the book ended See the bottom comment. (I know this isn’t by her but if you like wolf books you should read Jean Craighead George’s wolf books) P.S Kathryn Lasky is the best writer EVER
This is probably not going to be as exicting as the first one but it may have some high excitment parts. Maybe the murder frame will be a climax of the story and i think it’ll need more pages into the book, so if the author sees this please try to stretch the story or add more details.
O.M.G. I loved the first book …I’m sad Thunderheart died.
Ack, spoilers! :D But yes, I essentially agree with you — I also feel that the main reason for her death (from Kathryn Lasky’s point of view) was to leave Faolan alone, so that he becomes a “lone wolf”. And it’s really a pity that Thunderheart had to die simply because she was not part of Faolan’s journey anymore.
I felt so bad for Faolan when she died and he found her skeleton. Omg D: Poor Faolan.
OMG I loved the 1st book!! So sad.
OMG I NEED that book, the 1st one was so good. I hope the second will be just as good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah I hope they come out with a third. The 1st was sooo good I loved it except the fact that Thunderheart died.
There will be four books in total, according to Lasky. :)
4 books, sweet. xD I need them all. Loved the first. I was so sad though, when Thunderheart died.
Oh my gosh!!! I can’t WAIT till October!
You said it! I wonder if Faolan will be a watcher of the sacred volcanos.
He’ll probably get to be the ‘Fengo Of The Watch’.
I can’t wait until October! I need it! I am dying to know what happens.
I am, too! Why can’t it be October already? I don’t care about Halloween, I just want the book. But I understand what’s taking so long. Today I looked everywhere for the 2nd one. I am the #1 fan of the Wolves of the Beyond! But I’m also crazy about animals so…
Me too!
The first book was the best book I ever read, but Heep is a baby.
I totally agree, Heep stinks. He should die in the 2nd book!
I agree with both of you! Heep needs to jump off a cliff. He sucks. He’s a bitch.
Heep is a son of a bitch. Did you guys hear that he is going to set Faolan up? He is so mean and careless. He should jump in a fire pit.
Totally! I still can’t believe Faolan jumped it! Go Faolan!
Omg, I loved Lone Wolf and can’t wait to get The Gnaw Wolf! Faolan is so cool! Omg I can’t wait to read it! xD Heep doesn’t sound like the kind of wolf who would treat Faolan like that, hmmm interesting lol. xD Can’t wait to read it!
Why did I finish so soon?! Curse you, reading obsession!!!
I love the books, can’t wait ’til book 2
I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy! I wish it would could come out tomorrow! I really want to know if Faolan will ever belong and if he will watch the sacred ring of volcanos.
I can’t believe Foalan is accused of murder in the second book! He would never do that!
Maybe the third book could be of Faolan falling in love with someone who is higher rank then him.
i hate reading but when it comes to wolf books i cant stop cant wait till the second book comes out
I cried on chaper 19 when he found her skull it was so sad Isn’t heep the one that the Obea took care of? Or was that the one with the twisted leg? The cave of time was one of my favorite parts. When the book ended i was on the bus at my school and I said NO NO I NEVER WANTED THIS BOOK TO END NOOOOOOOOO
I have read the first book of the wolves of the beyond. When i read it i blocked everything out of my mind i felt the character as if i am that character. I was such a fan of the book. I was truely a fan and i still am. i even looked up tonight and found The Great Bear Constellation. I am still looking for The Great Wold Constellation if i knew its constellation name. If you want to find The Great Bear constellation then do it know it is only in the sky in summer. If you need to know what it looks like search up Ursa Major its made of light colored stars so you need to look hard and hope you find it.
